Guirassy brace helps Dortmund sink Villarreal in five-goal Champions League encounter

The German side left it until late in the match to claim three points against a stubborn Villarreal team, in a match that saw two own goals conceded.

Dortmund started the match brightly but could not test the La Liga sides goalkeeper despite creating a couple of half chances for Marcel Sabitzer and Serhou Guirassy in the opening twenty minutes.

The match was then stopped in the 24th minute after BVB defender Konstantinos Karetsas went down and was attended to by the medical team before being substituted for reported 'light-headedness as a result of circulatory issues'.

Both teams had a slow restart after the medical delay, with Dortmund ramping up the pressure shortly before half-time with Ethan Nwanieri and Guirassy coming close to breaking the deadlock.

The home side took the lead in the 53rd minute after opposition defender Renato Veiga miskicked his clearance into his own net after a Maximillan Beier cross.

Villarreal head coach Inigo Perez made a double change shortly after conceding and were rewarded just six minutes later as Santiago Mourinho powered home a header from a corner for the equalizer.

Niko Kovak responded with a 75th minute triple substitution as he looked to find a winner, which seemed to have arrived five minutes later when Guirassy converted from a brilliant Fabio Silva assist.

In the 83rd minute, the visitor's defender Santiago Mourino clumsily fouled Guinea international Guirassy in the box, with the forward calmly slotting home the resultant penalty.

The Yellow Submarine pulled one back late in additional time when Kobel deflected a free kick onto the face of Guirassy for the second own goal of the match.

"I'm very happy with the result. It was a crazy game and once again a very special atmosphere," said Guirassy to Prime after the match.

"Of course, I'm very grateful to Fabio [Silva] for his great assist. We shouldn't have conceded those goals. We still need to work on that. But in the end, we're glad we won. That gives us confidence for the rest of the season."

Dortmund will face Bodo/Glimt in their next clash of the league phase while Villareal host Napoli next month following the FIFA international break.
