Habib Diarra deal done: Sunderland swoop for Strasbourg star

The Black Cats have moved decisively to bolster their squad ahead of their Premier League return, outpacing rivals Leeds United and Everton in the race for the versatile playmaker.

Diarra, who caught attention with a goal against England for Senegal earlier this month, will undergo a medical at the Stadium of Light to finalize the move.

The transfer includes an initial fee of 31.5 million euros, with an additional 4 million euros in performance-related add-ons, as confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X, who stated, "Documents are being exchanged with Strasbourg, initial fee worth 31.5 million euros plus 4 million euros add-ons. Medical already booked, here we go 100% confirmed."

The signing comes on the heels of Jobe Bellingham's departure to Borussia Dortmund for 27.9 million euros, with Sunderland acting swiftly to replace the young midfielder.

Diarra, who captained Strasbourg and contributed four goals and five assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season, brings versatility and leadership. Football analyst Ben Mattinson praised Diarra's adaptability on X, noting, "Whether you need a 6, 8, 10, Habib Diarra can do it."

This move surpasses Sunderland's previous record transfer, the 20 million euros permanent signing of Enzo Le Fée from Roma in May, following their play-off triumph.

Manager Regis Le Bris, who guided the Black Cats back to the Premier League after an eight-year absence, is focused on building a squad capable of survival. Despite bookmakers tipping Sunderland as relegation favourites, Le Bris remains optimistic, with the club actively pursuing further additions before their season opener against Everton on August 18.

Diarra's arrival signals Sunderland's ambition to compete in the top flight, with fans eagerly awaiting his impact under Le Bris' pragmatic leadership.
