Hansi Flick sees Eric Garcia as future Barcelona captain

Barcelona arrives at La Cartuja after a convincing 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in midweek, a result Flick said reflected "the level the team reached last season". The manager added that the players "have shown real intensity" in recent weeks and insisted they were determined to extend their winning run against Real Betis.

Garcia's future was one of the key talking points on the eve of the match, with the 24-year-old defender having recently agreed fresh terms. Flick said the renewal was fully deserved based on his performances and his commitment to the club.

"The level he's performing at is very good," Flick said. "He knows the club very well and he deserved a new contract."

Flick went further, suggesting Garcia had the qualities needed to wear the armband in the future.

"He's an important player in the dressing room; he could become a captain," the Barcelona manager said. "He lives for the club and he loves it. Since the beginning of last season, I could see his potential. At first he had a few injuries, but he's a professional."

Flick praised the defender's versatility and attitude, calling him a model team-mate under his leadership.

"He focuses on playing football," he said. "If you want to be a leader, it's important to be professional, to have discipline, to care about the other players. He does that. He gives everything for the team, whether he plays right-back, left-back, centre-back, midfield, or even if he's on the bench. I'm really happy for him."

Garcia has emerged as one of Flick's most trusted players this season, with his sharp improvement making him a regular starter in Barcelona's defensive plans. Whether he lined up against Betis at centre-back or at right-back depended on Flick's tactical choice, but his importance to the side was no longer in question.
