Harry Kane double helps Bayern Munich survive late Frankfurt fightback

Kane bagged a brace of goals to take his tally to 28 in the Bundesliga this season.

While Bayern created almost three times as many chances as Frankfurt, both teams generated a similar amount of xG, with the visitors making the most of the limited opportunities they had.

Aleksander Pavlovic opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the 16th minute with a crisp volley from outside the box before Kane doubled their advantage just four minutes with a close-range header.

Kane made it 3-0 around the 70 minute-mark with a powerful low drive, putting Bayern Munich into a seemingly insurmountable position.

However, Frankfurt never stopped fighting and staged a late comeback to give the home side a real scare.

Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 77th minute after Kane fouled Oscar Hojlund in the box.

Then, with just four minutes left on the clock, Arnaud Kalimuendo scored a fortuitous goal with a bad clearance by Kim Min-jae bouncing off him and into the net to set up an exciting climax to the fixture.

Ultimately, Bayern were able to hold firm and cling on for the win but the match got far closer than they would have liked.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund lost ground in the title race with Bayern after salvaging a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.

The home side moved into an early 2-0 lead thanks to strikes by Christoph Baumgartner in the 20th and 39th minutes.

Dortmund were thrown a lifeline around the 50-minute mark when Romulo scored an own goal and Fabio Silva rescued a point with an equaliser deep into stoppage time at the end of the match.

A late Elvis Rexhbecaj goal handed Augsburg a 3-2 win in an exciting encounter with Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena.

Yannick Gerhardt put the hosts ahead with a goal in the 41st minute, with Rodrigo Ribeiro levelling matters 14 minutes into the second half.

Kento Shiogai restored their advantage in the 70th minute before a late blitz by Augsburg won them the points.

Michael Gregoritsch converted from the penalty spot in the 87th minute before Rexhbecaj scored three minutes into stoppage time to secure a dramatic win for the visitors.

Rani Khedira's 28th-minute strike was enough to hand Union Berlin a 1-0 win over Leverkusen at An der alten Forsterei, while Nediem Amiri (42') and Fabio Vieira (64') traded goals at MEWA Arena as Mainz and HSV drew 1-1.

There was another stalemate at RheinEnergieStadion with FC Koln and Hoffenheim playing out to a 2-2 draw.

Rangar Ache opened the scoring for Koln in the 15th minute with Ozan Kabak getting Hoffenheim back on level terms on the stroke of half-time.

Andrej Kramaric then put the visitors ahead with a goal in the 60th minute but it only lasted around three minutes, with Said El Mala netting an equaliser to earn the home side a point.
