Illness rules Dayot Upamecano out of Bayern Munich clash with Augsburg

The French centre-back had already missed Bayern's midweek 2-0 Champions League win over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and Kompany said he would not recover in time for Saturday's league fixture.

"He's ill. Unfortunately he's out," Kompany told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

The Bayern coach admitted there was some concern about illness spreading through the squad, but stressed that no other players were currently unavailable for physical reasons.

"Let's see who else will be missing. Nobody else for physical reasons," Kompany said. "But if a virus comes into the dressing room, I get scared. I hope nobody will be sidelined. But Upa will be in bed for a few more days - and hopefully nobody else."

Upamecano's absence added to Bayern's defensive problems. Sacha Boey, Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic were also unavailable, limiting Kompany's options at the back. Despite that, the Bayern boss remained confident in the depth of his squad.

"Josip Stanisic, Konrad Laimer, Sacha Boey and now Upa are all defenders we don't have," he said. "Nevertheless, we have good competition for places: Hiroki Ito is fit, Minjae is fit, Raphael Guerreiro and Tom Bischof. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka can also play there for us."

With Kim Minjae suspended for Bayern's upcoming Champions League match against PSV, the South Korean defender was expected to feature domestically alongside Jonathan Tah in central defence.

"Minjae will definitely not play next week, that's in our thoughts," Kompany added. "But I never really worry about the starting XI because I've always been reassured by the reliability of the team."
