Inter Milan confirm Lautaro Martinez sidelined with calf injury

Inter Milan confirm Lautaro Martinez sidelined with calf injury

The club announced that the Argentina forward will be sidelined for approximately three to four weeks. His condition will be reassessed by medical staff next week, but the early prognosis represents a significant setback at a decisive stage of the campaign.

Martinez has been the cornerstone of Cristian Chivu's side this season. Across all competitions in 2025-26, he has made 35 appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists. In Serie A, he has struck 14 times in 25 matches, adding four goals in eight Champions League outings. His influence stretches beyond statistics, with his pressing, leadership and movement central to Inter's attacking structure.

The injury means he is expected to miss league fixtures against Lecce and Genoa, the Champions League second leg against Bodo-Glimt, and the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg versus Como. There is now significant doubt surrounding his availability for the Derby della Madonnina in early March, with some reports suggesting he may not return until after the late-March international break.

Chivu, who replaced Simone Inzaghi in June 2025, must now rely on his attacking depth.

Marcus Thuram is likely to assume the role of primary scoring threat, carrying the responsibility in both domestic and European competition.

The coach could also turn to promising youngster Francesco Pio Esposito, who scored Inter's only goal in the defeat to Bodo-Glimt and has shown composure beyond his years.

Inter's response over the coming weeks will define their season. Without their captain and top scorer, the Nerazzurri must prove they have the resilience and depth to stay competitive on all fronts.
