Jeremie Frimpong's Netherlands performance re-opens 'best position' debate at Liverpool

Jeremie Frimpong's Netherlands performance re-opens 'best position' debate at Liverpool

The Dutch defender, expected to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in Arne Slot's system, endured a poor showing against Malta - continuing a difficult run of form that has mirrored his performances at club level.

Despite being known for his attacking flair, Frimpong has looked uncertain both defensively and offensively in recent weeks, leaving questions about whether he truly fits into Slot's tactical plans.

Last season, the 23-year-old contributed to 17 goals across all competitions, but his influence has waned since arriving at Anfield.

Dutch media have also expressed uncertainty over his best position, with his defensive shortcomings particularly evident in recent matches.

Slot, who continues to rotate between Frimpong and Conor Bradley at right-back, is still searching for a reliable solution. Liverpool's back four remains a weak point, with Ibrahima Konate's poor form adding to the instability.

Although some argue that Liverpool have not missed Alexander-Arnold's presence, his creativity and composure in possession have yet to be replicated.

Frimpong was meant to bring energy and directness down the flank, but his recent outings have instead raised doubts about his long-term role.

Elsewhere, Frimpong's compatriot Cody Gakpo stole the headlines for the Netherlands, scoring twice and assisting once - a sharp contrast to the right-back's ongoing frustrations at both club and international level.
