Xabi Alonso must navigate a difficult selection situation following Saturday's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, which ended Chelsea's run of consecutive victories after the extended international break.

The Blues will also host Manchester United on Saturday, further increasing the pressure on the manager to manage his available options.

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro is among those whose availability remains uncertain after suffering an injury during training at Cobham on Friday. A build-up of fluid initially prevented immediate scans, with further medical assessments expected to establish the extent of the problem.

"We don't know yet because he has a lot of fluid," said Alonso, when asked about Pedro.

"He felt it yesterday and we need to wait probably until tomorrow to do the test and to know the whole situation and the whole seriousness of the injury. We will know soon enough."

Pedro has already struggled with knee trouble this season, missing the Brentford defeat and consulting a specialist during the international break.

Chelsea are also without goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who underwent surgery for a fractured jaw following a collision against Everton and faces several weeks on the sidelines. Mike Penders is expected to deputise.

Captain Reece James is another long-term absentee, with the defender expected to spend around three months recovering after undergoing minor surgery to address a knee problem.

Meanwhile, Pep Chavarria could return after resuming partial training, potentially making himself available for either fixture this week.

Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha were also unavailable against Tottenham, while Cole Palmer's late dismissal adds another complication ahead of the Manchester United clash.
