John Stones opens up about injury struggles: 'You can't always see the light'

Stones, 31, was sidelined for large stretches of last season, missing 33 games in total and managing just six Premier League starts. A hamstring injury picked up during City's Champions League tie against Real Madrid in February ruled him out for the final three months.

Now back to full fitness, Stones is expected to feature in City's Club World Cup fixture against Al Ain on Sunday in Atlanta, after missing the opening match against Wydad AC.

"I'm back fit, feel great, and I'm excited to get going," said Stones. "It's difficult when you're injured. There have been points where you think, 'I've given everything,' and when you keep getting setbacks, those are the dark days."

Stones played a key role in the Citizens' treble-winning season in 2022/23, particularly for his ability to step into midfield and provide tactical flexibility. His absence, alongside injuries to fellow defenders Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, was keenly felt during a season where City fell short of their usual high standards.

"It's frustrating," Stones admitted. "I put a lot of pressure on myself. It's mentally challenging. There were low points last season where it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel."

One of the more difficult aspects for Stones was the lack of clear answers around the cause of his injuries.

"I don't know what the reason is," he said. "We've sat with the medical staff and sports scientists to try and figure it out. Some things can't be explained, which makes it even more testing mentally."

Manager Pep Guardiola has made it clear that fitness and availability will be key criteria as he evaluates his squad heading into the new season. With speculation surrounding potential departures, Stones-who has one year remaining on his contract - reiterated his commitment to the club.

"I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it," he said. "I'm here to help the team, and I hope that shuts down any speculation."

Guardiola, speaking ahead of the Al Ain match, welcomed the defender's return but echoed the importance of staying injury-free.

"What we want from John is to be fit," said the City boss. "His job is to play football. The rest - his talent, his ability - will take care of itself. We'll help him, and I'm sure he'll do the rest."

For Stones, the focus now is on regaining rhythm and re-establishing himself in the starting XI as City aim to bounce back from last season's disappointments.
