Jorrel Hato targets trophy success under Xabi Alonso at Chelsea

The Netherlands international joined Chelsea from Ajax in 2025 and admitted it took time to settle into life at the club. 

Although opportunities were limited during the first half of last season, Hato established himself in the team later in the campaign and is now determined to continue that progress.

"I've really enjoyed my time at Chelsea," Hato said.

"Even though I wasn't playing too much at the start, I never regretted it. I knew that I'd made a good decision to transfer to Chelsea.

"I'm really happy with the people here and with my team-mates. I'm excited to push on."

The defender is already enjoying working under Alonso and believes the Spaniard has given the squad confidence that they can compete for silverware.

"We've had a number of coaches during my time here, but under Xabi I think we have a great manager and we have a great opportunity to push for trophies," he said.

"It's very early to say that, of course, but I have the faith and the confidence in this team that we could do something special this season."

Chelsea have made a positive start to pre-season under Alonso, opening with a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers before travelling to Hong Kong, where they are preparing to face Juventus.

Hato has featured at both left-back and left-sided centre-back during the warm-up matches, with his versatility giving Alonso plenty of tactical options.

The 20-year-old believes his ability to play in several positions could prove valuable throughout the campaign.

"I think it can help, for sure," Hato said.

"We know the manager is very flexible with his approach, and we are like that as a team. Whether we play with a back four or a three, there are roles for me because I can play as a centre-back or as a left-back.

"I've also played in midfield and I do like to invert and get involved with the play, so I think I can offer the manager a good option."

Despite his versatility, Hato insists his priority is simply helping the team whenever he is called upon.

"For me though, it doesn't really matter," he said. "I'm happy to play wherever I'm needed, and whenever I put on the Chelsea shirt, I give my all."

Chelsea's next pre-season match is against Juventus on Wednesday at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.
