Josip Stanisic blow hits Bayern Munich as ankle injury rules defender out 'indefinitely'

Bayern confirmed on Sunday evening that the versatile Croatian picked up a capsular ligament injury to his right ankle late in the 8-1 victory.

Stanisic had played the full match, but was injured in the 92nd minute after twisting awkwardly while defending.

The 25-year-old initially tried to continue despite clear discomfort. However, two minutes later he was forced to leave the pitch and receive treatment on the sidelines. With Kompany having already used all five substitutes, Bayern ended the match with ten players.

A medical examination carried out by the club on Monday confirmed the extent of the injury, with Bayern announcing that Stanisic would be unavailable "for the time being". No firm return date was given.

Speaking immediately after the Wolfsburg match, Kompany admitted the situation looked concerning. "The twist didn't look good," the Bayern head coach said. "We now have to wait and see how serious the injury actually is." He also acknowledged that the injury reduced his options in defensive areas, particularly at left-back.

Stanisic has been a key squad player this season, featuring across the back line and logging more than 1,396 minutes in all competitions. His ability to cover multiple positions has been especially valuable during a demanding schedule.

While Bayern have not set a timetable for his return, the club's statement made clear that patience would be required as the defender begins his recovery, leaving Kompany to reshuffle his defensive plans in the weeks ahead.
