Kaizer Chiefs claim CUFA Cup with win over Marumo Gallants

The annual friendly competition, formally known as the Macufe Cup, took place at the Bloemfontein Stadium as part of the Cultural Urban Festival Africa celebrations.

There were doubts as to whether or not the match would go ahead on Saturday as Gallants struggled to come to an agreement with organisers.

The issue was, however, resolved the morning of the match and the two teams took to the field for an entertaining encounter.

Wandile Duba tested Kagiso Mlambo early on, while Siyabulela Shai was denied by Bruce Bvuma at the other end as both teams got off to a positive start.

A blow for Chiefs saw an injured Christian replaced by Mfundo Vilakazi on the half hour mark.

Ranga Chivaviro saw his effort well saved Mlambo ahead of the half-time break, and the same player had the best chance after the break as he rifled in a shot on goal on 60 minutes, only for Mfundo to stand strong again.

Monde Mpambaniso enjoyed Gallants' best chance with a drive that flew just over the target, leaving the two teams having to settle for the lottery of a penalty shootout.

Gallants missed twice to hand new Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi his first silverware for the club.
