Kaizer Chiefs' Orbit clash relocated to Gqeberha amid PSL venue switch

Kaizer Chiefs' Orbit clash relocated to Gqeberha amid PSL venue switch

What was initially meant to be a short trip to Rustenburg will now see Amakhosi travel over 1,100km to face Orbit at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on April 6. The fixture had first been earmarked for Olympia Park, Orbit's usual home ground, before concerns over pitch quality and limited capacity forced a rethink.

A move to the nearby Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace - just a few kilometres away - appeared the logical solution. However, the PSL ultimately opted for a more drastic relocation, taking the match to Gqeberha in anticipation of a significantly larger crowd driven by Chiefs' nationwide support.

The decision leaves Orbit supporters in Rustenburg and surrounding areas without the chance to witness what is arguably the club's biggest home game of the season. It also prolongs the absence of top-flight football at Royal Bafokeng, which has not hosted a league fixture since 2023.

For Chiefs, the change adds yet another demanding journey to an already travel-heavy schedule. In recent weeks, the Soweto giants have crisscrossed southern Africa, with trips including Zambia and Egypt, as well as domestic fixtures in Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town, Polokwane and Richards Bay.

Despite the logistical challenges, Chiefs head into the encounter with renewed confidence. Consecutive wins over Durban City FC and Magesi FC have lifted them into fourth place, reviving their push for a CAF interclub qualification spot after a difficult run of form.
