Kasper Hjulmand bids emotional farewell to Bayer Leverkusen

Kasper Hjulmand bids emotional farewell to Bayer Leverkusen

The Danish coach, who took charge in September during a period of major change at the club, reflected on a campaign that saw Leverkusen finish sixth in the Bundesliga and secure European football despite a challenging year.

In a statement to supporters, players and staff, Hjulmand expressed his disappointment at leaving but said he respected the club's decision.

"Together, we mastered the season as well as possible," Hjulmand said. "We experienced many unforgettable moments, celebrated important victories, had to cope with difficult setbacks and experienced the full spectrum of emotions that football brings. We made significant progress, and each and every one of you contributed to this journey."

The former Denmark manager thanked everyone at the club for making him feel at home from the moment he arrived and reserved special praise for the Leverkusen supporters.

One memory stood out above all others. Hjulmand recalled a difficult UEFA Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain when his side received an early red card and suffered a heavy loss. Despite the result, the supporters remained behind the team.

"After the final whistle, you were still there, applauding and supporting the team," he said. "For me, that was a true symbol of what it means to be a real fan. I will never forget that moment."

Hjulmand also paid tribute to his coaching staff for their professionalism and dedication, while thanking the players for their commitment throughout the season.

"To the players: Thank you. I enjoyed every single day with you," he said. "It was an honour to be your coach. I have learned a great deal from you all and will continue to follow your careers with great interest and admiration."

The 53-year-old leaves believing the club is well placed for the future.

"The team is in a strong position," Hjulmand added. "This club has enormous potential, and I have no doubt that many great moments lie ahead. Bayer Leverkusen has become a part of me."

Leverkusen have already appointed a successor, with Spanish coach Carles Martinez Novell taking over on a two-year contract that runs until June 2028.
