Liverpool captain Van Dijk would 'accept' fifth-place finish this season
Virgil van Dijk has admitted Liverpool FC would accept a fifth-place finish this season, as long as it secures a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich's trip to Mainz 05 on Saturday, the Bayern boss pointed to recent domestic cup action as proof of the league's quality.
"If you watched Freiburg against Stuttgart, you saw the quality of the Bundesliga," Kompany said. "England has bought a lot of quality, but when you see the cup semi-final, the next generation of top talent is right here in Germany."
Bayern's own young prospects have been central to that claim. Lennart Karl is among the latest names to emerge, while several others have made their senior debuts under Kompany this season, highlighting the club's commitment to youth development.
On the pitch, Bayern have continued to dominate. Goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz secured victory over Bayer Leverkusen, sending the Bavarians into the DFB Cup Final for the first time in six years.
Having already wrapped up the league title in record-breaking fashion, Bayern's numbers underline their dominance. They have scored 109 goals and conceded just 29 after 30 matches, comfortably the best record in the division.
"Having success here isn't easy," Kompany explained. "It's fun working in this group but also in this league, because football in Germany is attractive. It looks easier than it is, but it takes a lot of energy, so we can be proud."
Attention now turns to a defining period in Bayern's season. After the Mainz clash, they travel to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg.
A domestic cup final against VfB Stuttgart awaits on 23 May, with the possibility of a European final just a week later. With silverware already secured and more within reach, Kompany's Bayern are now firmly focused on completing a historic treble.
