Yamal penalty sinks Celta as Barca edge towards title
Barcelona strengthened their grip at the top of the La Liga table with a gritty 1-0 win over Celta Vigo at the Spotify Nou Camp on Wednesday.
Barca star Lamine Yamal stepped up to convert a 40th minute penalty after being fouled in the box by Celta defender Yoel Lago following a tense opening stanza.
However, Yamal had to be substituted before half-time after apparently picking up an injury shortly after scoring from the spot, making it the second forced change following Joao Cancelo's earlier withdrawal.
Ferran Torres saw his second half effort ruled out by VAR for offside as the Catalans tried to double their lead, but the home side managed to close out the result and restore a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
Elche move out relegation zone after beating Atletico
Relegation threatened Elche defeated ten-man Atletico Madrid 3-2 to move out of the drop zone while condemning the visitors to a fourth straight defeat in the league.
An Andre Silva second half strike was enough to decide a tricky encounter and moved Elche from 18th to 15th spot on the log after a frantic first half that produced four goals and a red card for Atletico forward Thiago Almada.
The result sees Diego Simeone's side remain fourth on the table.
Getafe jump into Europa spot after edging Sociedad
Getafe recorded an important 1-0 victory away to recently crowned Copa del Rey champions Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.
A 29th minute own goal by Sociedad midfielder Jon Gorrotxategi was enough to condemn his side to defeat after winger Brais Mendez had missed a penalty earlier in the half.
El Geta now move up to sixth position on the league table while La Real remain eighth.
