Sergio Ramos edges closer to Sevilla takeover as talks advance on 450 million euros deal

The 40-year-old is leading a consortium backed by football investment group Five Eleven Capital, which has been working on a deal to acquire the financially troubled LaLiga side since late 2025. Reports indicate that a 450 million euro bid has already been approved by shareholders, granting Ramos's group an exclusivity period to review the club's accounts and progress negotiations.

Speaking at an event in Seville on Tuesday, Ramos said the process is moving in the right direction.

"I think there will be some news in a few months, or even weeks, and we hope it will be the news we're all hoping for. Everything is going well," he said.

Ramos added: "I'm feeling great. I'm spending a lot of time with my family at the moment and am really enjoying it."

The project has gained momentum despite Sevilla's ongoing sporting and financial difficulties. The club narrowly avoided relegation last season and remain involved in a survival battle again this year, sitting just above the drop zone with seven matches remaining after winning nine and losing 15 of their 31 league games.

A relegation clause has reportedly been included in the proposed deal, meaning any takeover would only be completed after the season ends, regardless of whether Sevilla stay in LaLiga or drop to the second tier.

Interest in the bid has also been strengthened by backing from influential former club figures, including ex-sporting director Monchi, while earlier investors are understood to have withdrawn after reviewing the scale of Sevilla's financial issues.

Ramos, who has not officially announced his retirement since leaving Monterrey in December, remains in a unique position. Should the acquisition be finalised, he would either be required to retire from playing or continue his career outside Spain due to regulations preventing active players from owning stakes in clubs within the same league.

A product of Sevilla's academy, Ramos made his first-team debut in 2004 before moving to Real Madrid a year later. He returned for a second spell in 2023–24 and has long been emotionally linked with the club where he made 87 appearances and scored 10 goals in his early career.

While speculation has occasionally linked him with a playing return, Sevilla's financial constraints make such a scenario highly unlikely, even on reduced terms.

For now, Ramos insists progress is being made - and that clarity on a potential landmark takeover may not be far away.
