Gavin Hunt says Stellenbosch must be at their best to disrupt title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns

Gavin Hunt says Stellenbosch must be at their best to disrupt title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns

Stellies enjoyed some good form under Hunt in the first half of the current season but have struggled for consistency in recent weeks.

Three draws preceded a 2-1 win at home to Chippa United, but they lost 2-1 to Richards Bay before a strong 3-1 win at home to Sekhuhkune United last time out.

They are currently in ninth place on the league standings with 31 points from 24 games, while the Brazilians are in second place and hoping to return to the summit with all three points at Loftus Versfeld.

Sundowns are two points adrift of current league leaders Orlando Pirates but with two games in hand.

"It was important for us to win last week, especially coming into the Sundowns game," Hunt told his club's website ahead of the midweek clash.

"They are, for me, certainly one of the top sides in Africa. We are under no illusions about what we face and what will be a very difficult task.

"They haven't lost in about 52 games at Loftus and at home, so it won't be easy.

"I'm looking forward to it, though, and we'll go there with a good plan and see if it works.

“We can only play to our full ability, and we will need to do the right things at the right time, but that's football.”
