The Danish centre-back, whose contract expires on 30 June, is still recovering from a partial anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee that has kept him out since just before Christmas. Despite his fitness setback, Christensen has made it clear that his preference is to stay at Barcelona.
The club responded by offering a new deal on reduced wages, structured as a one-year extension with an optional additional year based on performance-related conditions. However, Christensen has rejected those terms after several rounds of discussions.
Barcelona's stance is understood to be firm. Any renewal will only be offered on lower salary terms compared to his current contract, which still reflects the package agreed when he arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022, including a significant signing bonus.
Despite the impasse, the 30-year-old Christensen has not closed the door on a new agreement. He has instructed his representatives to continue negotiations, with the player reportedly settled in both Barcelona and the surrounding lifestyle.
Interest in the defender is also growing elsewhere, with clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and La Liga monitoring his situation and prepared to offer more lucrative contracts if he becomes available.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is said to value Christensen's experience, versatility, and defensive quality, viewing him as an important squad option when fit. However, the club remains committed to its wage structure policy.
With no agreement currently in place, Christensen's future will likely depend on whether both sides are willing to compromise in the coming weeks before his contract expires.
