La Liga: Villarreal jump to third, Getafe, Espanyol claim narrow wins

Girona 3-3 Oviedo

Girona were held to a 3-3 draw at the Estadi Montilivi Stadium on Saturday after rallying back from 2-0 down.

The visitors took the lead in the 38th minute when Federico Vinas converted from the penalty spot after VAR had upheld a decision for a foul.

Oviedo doubled their lead through a powerful Salomon Rondon header from a Santiago Colombatto cross in the 58th minute.

A triple substitution by Girona manager Michel triggered a comeback, with Cristhian Stuani scoring a penalty in the 63rd minute following a VAR check.

Azzedine Ounahi rose highest to draw the home team level in 83rd minute after a Thomas Lemar corner kick before another penalty was converted by Stuani.

However, Oviedo defender David Carmo scored deep into stoppage time to share the spoils.

Espanyol 1-0 Elche

Espanyol edged Elche 1-0 at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday to move into fourth spot on the LaLiga table.

The home side looked dangerous from the onset, testing Elche goalkeeper Inaki Pena from as early as the second minute but failed to score in the first half.

Espanyol defender Carlos Romero broke the deadlock in the 48th minute after a neat assist from Edu Exposito, and it turned out to be the winner as Elche struggled to create clear chances.

The result sees Elche remain in seventh spot on the league table.

Athletic Club 0-1 Getafe

Getafe ended a five-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory against Athletic Club at the San Mames Stadium on Saturday.

The first half was plagued with set pieces from both sides, but nobody was able to break the deadlock heading into the break.

Athletic ramped up the pressure in the second half but Getafe were resolute in defence before Borja Mayoral well-placed shot gave the visitors the lead in the 75th minute to claim all three points.

The result leaves Athletic Club in eight spot whilst Getafe move up to ninth position on the LaLiga table.

Valencia 0-2 Villarreal

Valencia's woes continued as Villareal claimed a 2-0 victory at the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday to extend their winless run to five matches.

Villarreal took the lead at the stroke of half-time through Gerard Moreno's penalty following a VAR review.

Santi Comesana doubled the lead for the visitors in the 57th minute following a period of sustained pressure.

The loss leaves Valencia in 15th spot on the LaLiga table whilst Villarreal move up to third on the LaLiga table.
