Leeds tear Newcastle apart in big victory

The result maintained Leeds' unbeaten start to the Premier League season and moved them up to third in the early table, while ending Matthias Jaissle's perfect run without defeat as Newcastle manager.

Leeds dominated from the opening stages and created several chances before finally breaking through in the 32nd minute.

Ao Tanaka's effort from outside the box took two deflections before finding the bottom corner, with Lewis Miley credited with an own goal.

The home side doubled their advantage just two minutes later. James Justin delivered a dangerous cross into the box and Jayden Bogle got the final touch to make it 2-0.

Calvert-Lewin was causing Newcastle constant problems and came close to adding a third when he followed up after Lukas Hornicek had saved from a cross, but the goalkeeper reacted quickly to keep out the striker's effort.

Newcastle briefly threatened when Harvey Barnes found space, only for Tarik Muharemovic to make an important block.

Calvert-Lewin finally got his reward in first-half stoppage time. He battled his way beyond Sven Botman before driving a low finish into the net to give Leeds a commanding 3-0 lead.

The goal was his third in his last four appearances in all competitions and his eighth Premier League goal against Newcastle, making them his favourite opponent in the competition.

Newcastle improved slightly after the break, with Lewis Hall forcing a save from James Trafford, but Leeds remained dangerous.

Anton Stach then missed an opportunity to extend the lead when he fired into the side netting after Botman lost possession.

Leeds did not have to wait long for their fourth goal, however. Noah Okafor met the ball on the edge of the box and struck a powerful half-volley beyond Hornicek to complete an emphatic night for the hosts.

Okafor had previously worked under Jaissle at Red Bull Salzburg, making the goal particularly painful for the Newcastle boss.

Newcastle eventually found a consolation goal in the 90th minute when Bazoumana Toure calmly finished to score his first Premier League goal.

Jaissle admitted afterwards that Newcastle had been unable to cope with Leeds' intensity, particularly during the opening 45 minutes.

"It's tough, really tough, difficult to digest," Jaissle told Sky Sports. "This is a chance to learn straight out of it and there's not much time to the next match, which is good."

The 38-year-old refused to make excuses for the performance and said his young squad had to respond quickly.

"With our young squad there will be ups and downs. Leeds are so intense, especially at home and we could not match that physicality in the first half," he said.

"I don't want to have excuses, we need to learn and be better. We missed the fundamentals."

Leeds have now lost only once in their last 13 league matches, while their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign has put them among the early pace-setters.

For Newcastle, the defeat brought an emphatic end to their unbeaten start and their six-match unbeaten run against Leeds.
