Liverpool secure star midfielder Florian Wirtz in blockbuster move from Leverkusen

The 22-year-old German international has signed a long-term contract with the Reds after completing a medical and finalizing personal terms, marking a significant coup for the Premier League champions.

Wirtz, who reunites with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield, expressed his excitement to Liverpool's official website after putting pen to paper.

"I'm thrilled and proud to join this club," he said. "It's been a long wait, but now it's done, and I'm ready for this new challenge in the Premier League. I've spoken to players who've played here, and they said the atmosphere and pitches are incredible. I can't wait to play my first game."

Widely regarded as a generational talent, Wirtz has carved out an impressive career since his Bundesliga debut for Leverkusen in May 2020 at just 17 years and 15 days old. Weeks later, he announced himself by scoring against Bayern Munich, quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of Leverkusen's midfield.

His standout 2023-24 season saw him play a pivotal role in their unbeaten Bundesliga campaign and German Cup triumph, alongside a run to the Europa League final. Despite Leverkusen's less dominant 2024-25 season, Wirtz continued to shine, netting six goals in nine Champions League appearances.

His international credentials are equally strong, with 31 caps and seven goals for Germany, including two strikes during Euro 2024. A serious injury in March 2022 briefly stalled his meteoric rise, but his resilience and quality have made him a prime target for Europe's elite clubs.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who guided the Reds to the Premier League title last season, sees Wirtz as a key piece in their quest for more silverware.

Speaking on the club's ambitions, Wirtz added, "I want to win everything every year. Liverpool won the league last season, and my goal is to help them defend it and go deep in the Champions League. I'm ambitious and ready to work."

Recent posts on X from Liverpool's official account confirmed the transfer, with the club teasing Wirtz's arrival with a video captioned, "A new star joins the Reds!  #WirtzIsRed."

Meanwhile, Leverkusen's official X account paid tribute, stating, "Thank you, Florian, for everything. Wishing you all the best at Liverpool!  #Bayer04."

Wirtz will join his new teammates for pre-season training in July, with his squad number to be confirmed later this summer. As Liverpool prepare for another grueling campaign, the addition of Wirtz signals their intent to dominate both domestically and in Europe.
