Mamelodi Sundowns sweep aside Saint-Eloi Lupopo in Champions League opener

With the Congolese side expected to bring physicality, especially after their fiery preliminary tie against Orlando Pirates, the Brazilians showed composure, control, and superior quality throughout, creating enough chances to win by an even bigger margin.

Sundowns could not have asked for a better start. Inside the opening five minutes, Miguel Reisinho delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, which Santos guided home with a composed finish past goalkeeper Simon Loti to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The early breakthrough lifted the intensity of the match, with Lupopo increasing their tempo while Sundowns focused on dictating play. Tashreeq Matthews twice came close to doubling the advantage, first missing a clear chance and later seeing his powerful header crash off the crossbar in the 28th minute.

Despite struggling to penetrate the Downs defence for most of the half, Lupopo found a lifeline just before the break. Poor marking at the back by the hosts allowed Ramos Kashala Wanet to slip in at the near post and finish from a tight angle, levelling the match at 1-1 heading into half-time.

Both teams emerged from the interval determined to find the next goal. Santos nearly restored Sundowns' lead with a first-time shot from an Aubrey Modiba delivery, but his effort was blocked. Moments later, a beautiful combination play unlocked the visitors' defence, with Allende calmly finishing inside the box to make it 2-1.

Growing frustration saw Lupopo resort to rough challenges, with Kashala cautioned for a dangerous tackle on Teboho Mokoena. Sundowns, however, maintained their rhythm and sealed the victory in the 77th minute when Santos rose highest to head home his second of the afternoon, capping off a fluid attacking move.

The hosts closed out the game confidently, securing a strong start to their group-stage journey as they chase continental glory once again.
