Real Madrid beat PSG to signing of Argentine prodigy Franco Mastantuono
Real Madrid have won the race for one of South America's brightest young stars, confirming the signing of 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono from River Plate.
The 21-year-old forward joins City for an initial fee of 36 million euros, bolstering Pep Guardiola's attacking options ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup later this month.
Cherki, who made an eye-catching debut for France against Spain last week, is set to link up with City's squad at their training camp in Florida this week. The team will face Moroccan side Wydad AC in their Club World Cup opener in Philadelphia on June 18.
"This is a dream for me," Cherki said in a statement released by the club. "To join a team like Manchester City and take the next step in my career here is something very special. I've worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop under Pep and his staff."
City reportedly beat off interest from several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs, with Cherki ultimately convinced by Guardiola's vision during direct talks, according to sources close to the deal.
"Everyone knows how good City are - they've been dominant for years," Cherki added. "I'm ready to take on the responsibility to help the team keep winning. Leaving Lyon wasn't easy, but City's project is one I truly believe in. I'm excited to show what I can bring."
Cherki leaves Lyon having made 185 appearances and scored 29 goals, and he becomes the first major summer signing at the Etihad as City gear up for another demanding campaign.
He may not be the only new face before the Club World Cup kicks off. AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is also expected to join the squad, with a 55 million euro deal in place. The Dutch international has been granted permission to leave national team duty to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms.
