Man Utd's midfield overhaul begins with Christian Eriksen's departure

The 32-year-old, who has made 93 appearances for the Red Devils since joining on a free transfer, has only started twice since the new year, signaling his diminishing role under manager Ruben Amorim.

Eriksen's contract, which pays him 150,000 pounds weekly, will not be renewed, aligning with the club's strategy under Sir Jim Ratcliffe to prune high earners from the payroll.

This decision could save Manchester United an estimated 7.8 million pounds annually, excluding other departing stars like Casemiro, whose departure would further reduce the wage bill significantly.

Former Real Madrid and Everton player Thomas Gravesen has expressed concerns about Eriksen's future in football. "It is 100% over for Christian Eriksen at Manchester United this summer, and I also fear that his career is over," Gravesen said.

He highlighted the challenges Eriksen might face in finding a new club willing to match his current salary, drawing parallels with compatriot Simon Kjaer's recent career end.

Despite these concerns, there is still interest from clubs in Turkey and potentially Saudi Arabia, though these moves would likely involve a salary reduction.

Eriksen's illustrious career, which includes a dramatic recovery from a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, might not see the fitting closure fans hoped for unless a suitable opportunity arises.

On the transfer front, Manchester United are not just focusing on farewells. The club has been given the green light to sign Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak for a bargain of 25 to 30 million euros, much less than his release clause of 103 million euros.

Additionally, with Eriksen and Casemiro's exits, United's scouts are actively monitoring Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, with interest also bubbling for Athletic Bilbao's Oihan Sancet.
