Manchester City cruise into Carabao Cup final with dominant win over holders Newcastle United

The Citizens won the first leg at St James' Park 2-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Omar Marmoush (7', 29') bagged a brace with two early goals before Tijjani Reijnders sealed the win with his goal strike 32 minutes.

Anthony Elanga netted a 62nd minute consolation goal for Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola's side will now face Arsenal in the final after the Premier League leaders beat Chelsea 4-2 over two legs in their semi. Guardiola has led City to four previous League Cup titles.

Speaking after the game, the head coach said he was delighted for his players but questioned the rule that rules Marc Guehi out of the final.

Guardiola said in the Guardian: "Many of us, including me, we are really happy to come back to the final – and for many players that have never been in the final, the Carabao Cup, or a final with this club, it's a good thing to experience that."

Guehi was not eligible to play for City as he had already played for Crystal Palace earlier in the competition.

"I told the club we must ask – hopefully we can convince the Carabao Cup that Marc can play the final. I don't understand why he cannot play the final. Hopefully we make a letter – you buy a player for a lot of money and he is not able to play for a rule I don’t understand. Hopefully they can change it," Guardiola added.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was naturally disappointed to see his side's Carabao Cup campaign end, after seeing off Liverpool 2-1 in last season's final.

He said: "It is painful, we loved the ride we had last year – it was an incredible experience, and we were desperate to have it again.

Howe added that he expects Anthony Gordon to be sidelined for some time, after he was withdrawn in the second half with a hamstring injury.

"It looks a hamstring problem – a big worry,” the coach added.

Bernardo Silva is, meanwhile is a doubt for City, after he missed the semi-final second leg with a back muscle problem.
