Mngqithi believes Jiyane’s rise at Lamontville Golden Arrows is proof that intelligence, aggression and consistency can outweigh physical size — a point he reinforced by comparing the 23-year-old to some of the game’s most respected defenders.
Despite standing shorter than the traditional centre-back profile, Jiyane has been ever-present for Arrows this season, clocking more minutes than any of his teammates and featuring in all 24 Betway Premiership matches so far. His leadership qualities have also been recognised, with the armband handed to him following the departure of Gladwin Shitolo.
“He has been very instrumental for our team. He worked his way into the starting XI and earned the captaincy through consistency,” the Arrows coach was quoted by Sportswire.
Jiyane’s performances have drawn comparisons to club legend Siyabonga Sangweni, who also flourished under Mngqithi before going on to achieve success with Orlando Pirates. But the Arrows coach went even further, referencing global icons such as Fabio Cannavaro and Carles Puyol — defenders who built illustrious careers despite not fitting the conventional physical mould.
“A lot of people say he is too short, but he wins duels against the tallest strikers. He is excellent one-on-one and very quick, which suits how we want to play,” he explained.
Alongside Ntandoyenkosi Mabaso, Jiyane has formed a dynamic defensive partnership built on speed and aggression — key attributes in Arrows’ high-intensity approach.
Mngqithi also used the opportunity to question selection trends in South African football, suggesting that physical presence is often prioritised over technical and tactical ability.
In Jiyane, however, he sees a player capable of redefining those norms — and potentially inspiring a shift in how defenders are evaluated in the local game.
