Marc-Andre ter Stegen injury blow disrupts Barcelona's Supercopa plans

Marc-Andre ter Stegen injury blow disrupts Barcelona's Supercopa plans

The 33-year-old goalkeeper was unable to complete Tuesday's training session in Jeddah after experiencing physical discomfort, prompting concern among the coaching staff. After an initial assessment, the club opted not to take any risks and confirmed that Ter Stegen would fly back to Barcelona to undergo further examinations, ruling him out of the Supercopa.

The latest issue adds to a difficult period for the German international, who has struggled with fitness problems over the past two years. He missed most of last season with a knee injury and began the current campaign sidelined following back surgery. Since returning in December, he has managed just one appearance, coming in a Copa del Rey victory over Guadalajara.

During his absence, Ter Stegen has lost his starting role to Joan Garcia, a 25 million euros signing from Espanyol. Head coach Hansi Flick has repeatedly stated that García is now his first-choice goalkeeper, a stance that has left the long-serving No. 1 in a precarious position during a World Cup year.

With Ter Stegen unavailable, Barcelona have moved quickly to bolster their squad in Saudi Arabia. United States under-20 international Diego Kochen has been called up from the reserve team and will travel to Jeddah to provide cover alongside García and veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for Wednesday's semifinal against Athletic Club.
