Hansi Flick backs Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi as Barcelona's defensive backbone

Hansi Flick backs Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi as Barcelona's defensive backbone

The duo have now started together eight times going into 2026, overtaking the seven appearances of Cubarsi and Ronald Araujo.

Flick has praised the partnership for both its tactical benefits and the development of the players. "Having a left-footed player like Martin in the centre opens up so many possibilities in our build-up," Flick said. "It also gives us more options when our full-backs push high."

The German coach has been impressed with Martin's adaptability since testing him in the 2025 preseason. "Gerard has become a guarantee at centre-back," Flick said. "His composure, mental attitude and work ethic are exceptional. He operates like a machine."

Flick also highlighted the maturity both players bring to the backline. "The calmness they show on the pitch is impressive," he added. "Martín plays with the same experience as Cubarsi, despite being younger."

Statistical analysis confirms their effectiveness. The Cubarsi-Martin pairing has conceded just one goal per game on average, compared to 1.9 for the Cubarsi-Araujo combination. Flick sees this as a sign the club may not need a new centre-back this season. "We can also use Gerard Martin in that position. I value him a lot," he said.

Barcelona will next face Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Wednesday at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

The final is scheduled for Sunday, January 11, with Real Madrid taking on Atletico Madrid in the other semi-final. After Jeddah, Barcelona will return to La Liga action against Real Sociedad on January 18.
