Joan Garcia makes history as Barcelona eye Super Cup glory

The feat matched a landmark previously set by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, making Garcia only the second Barcelona goalkeeper in La Liga history to achieve this combination.

Facing his former club in a hostile RCDE Stadium, Garcia displayed remarkable composure. Manager Hansi Flick praised his approach: "He showed character, maturity and an approach beyond his years."

García remained humble about his Man of the Match award. "Yes, I agree. We didn't play the way we wanted. We didn't deserve to win," he said.

On his role, he added, "I had to step up in a few tough situations tonight, that's what it means to be the goalkeeper for Barcelona. The goalkeeper is there to save the situation, so that's my responsibility."

The victory extended Barcelona's winning streak in La Liga to nine games and highlighted García's growing consistency. This performance, his second consecutive MVP award, strengthens his case as one of the club's most reliable players and puts him firmly in the conversation for international recognition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Barcelona now turn their focus to the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. The reigning La Liga champions and Copa del Rey winners will face Athletic Bilbao in Wednesday's semi-final in Jeddah, with the winner meeting Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in Sunday's final.

Injury and Suspension Updates

Ronald Araujo - Major doubt; recently returned from personal leave; "not 100% physically" according to Flick; potential return January 7 vs Athletic.

Gavi - Out; recovering from right knee surgery; expected February return.

Andreas Christensen - Out; partial ACL tear in December; return date unknown.

Suspensions - None.

With Garcia in record-breaking form and the squad largely healthy, Barcelona will carry confidence and momentum into the Super Cup as they chase another trophy.
