Mason Greenwood plans on staying at Marseille to play Champions League football

The former Manchester United forward, who has revitalized his career in Ligue 1, expressed his ambition to remain with the French giants and compete in the Champions League next season.

Greenwood's stunning 85th-minute long-range strike against Le Havre sparked wild celebrations among Marseille's travelling fans, securing their place among Europe's top clubs. Amine Gouiri's injury-time goal capped a night of jubilation, ensuring Marseille no worse than a third-place finish in Ligue 1, with a chance to claim second if they defeat Rennes in their final match.

Reflecting on the achievement, Greenwood said, "I hope to be here next year to play in the Champions League. Some players told me it's something special here. It's been a very positive season. We achieved our goals and qualified for the Champions League."

He also addressed his positional preferences, adding, "I feel better on the right flank, but I'll play wherever the coach needs me, even defence. What matters is what the coach wants."

Under Roberto De Zerbi's guidance, Marseille have undergone a remarkable transformation. The Italian coach, who joined last summer, implemented innovative training methods, including a four-day camp in Mallemort, which fostered team unity.

However, De Zerbi has demanded more consistency, previously noting, "I expect more from him. He has to be more determined to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion."

Despite interest from Premier League clubs and Barcelona, Greenwood remains focused on Marseille. He acknowledged mid-season struggles, saying, "I wasn't at my best, probably had some defensive difficulties, but everyone supported me. We worked in training to resolve those issues and stayed united."

De Zerbi echoed this, emphasizing Greenwood's potential to become a "Marseille legend," but urged him to improve his work rate, stating, "He has the qualities to join the pantheon of Marseille greats, but he needs to push himself more."
