Maxime Lopez willing to switch allegiance from France to Algeria

Maxime Lopez willing to switch allegiance from France to Algeria

The 27-year-old, who captains Paris FC, rejoined the domestic scene in the summer of 2024 after signing from Olympique de Marseille, guiding his new club to promotion from Ligue 2 at the first attempt.

Now competing in Ligue 1, Lopez continues to excel as the heartbeat of the side, contributing three assists as Paris FC sit a respectable 11th in the table. His composure, vision, and leadership have been central to the club's steady adaptation to top-flight football.

Despite representing France up to under-21 level, Lopez has never featured for the senior national team.

Speaking in an interview with Canal Plus, the midfielder revealed he remains open to switching allegiance to Algeria, for whom he is eligible through his mother.

"If ever the Algerian national team call me up, I'll go," said the Paris FC star.

"People will say that I'm opportunistic, there is the AFCON, the World Cup, but I think in a season where there is no AFCON, there is no World Cup, if I was called up, I'd go. I'm a competitor and I want to play at national level, too.

"[People may say] that it's been years that he has been talking about the France national team and all of that, but honestly, I've always talked about the France national team because the Algerian national team has never contacted me.

"Recently, I was contacted by them to see where I was. If ever I'm called up, I'll go, but we'll see what happens in the future."
