Michael Carrick backs Luke Shaw "to lead Man Utd" next season

Shaw scored his first goal in more than three years during United's dramatic 3-2 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday. The 30-year-old has also been close to ever-present this season and could start every league match if he keeps his place for the final game against Brighton next week.

After struggling through injury-hit seasons, Shaw has re-established himself as one of United's most reliable players. He managed only 19 Premier League appearances across the previous two campaigns, but the reduced fixture schedule this season has helped him stay fit and regain top form.

United are expected to target another left-back during the summer transfer window, yet Carrick insisted Shaw's experience and leadership will still make him an important member of the squad.

"I think when there's so many games it's not easy for anybody," Carrick said. "Sometimes injuries and other things are part of football, so to start every game is a fantastic achievement.

"Next season is different and there will be different runs of games, but that comes with experience and understanding your body and managing yourself properly.

"He's at that stage now where he's got a lot of experience. He's been here a long time, he knows the club, he knows the highs and he's been through the difficult moments as well. His experience will be valuable, however many games he plays."

Shaw's strong season has also boosted his hopes of returning to the England squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America. He has not played for England since the Euro 2024 final, but he has been included in the provisional 55-man long-list.

Carrick backed Shaw, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo to earn places in the final 26-man squad.

"I certainly think so," Carrick said about Shaw's chances. "The consistency, his performances, his experience and the qualities he brings make him a fantastic full-back.

"I think all three of them have helped their chances recently for sure."
