Michael Carrick signals Bruno Fernandes importance as key for Man Utd's future

Fernandes was once again central to United's Premier League success on Sunday, providing two assists in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. His 16 assists this season set a new club record, surpassing David Beckham's 15 in a single campaign.

Carrick praised his star midfielder after the match. "Bruno is definitely not someone we'd want to lose," the interim manager said. "He's important for us, and certainly a decisive figure in games like this."

Asked if United would prioritise keeping Fernandes this summer, Carrick added: "It's difficult for me to get too involved in that side of things. But in terms of his role on the pitch, he's key for us."

The 31-year-old has now recorded over 100 goals and 100 assists for United across all competitions, and he currently leads the Premier League assist charts for 2025/26.

Fernandes is chasing the all-time single-season assist record of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20).

Carrick's comments come ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window, which opens on June 1 and runs until September 1. United will hope Fernandes remains at Old Trafford as they push for a top-four finish and continue their challenge for silverware.
