Miguel Cardoso cautions against misstep after Sundowns' statement win in Premiership title chase

The Brazilians have been battling it out with Orlando Pirates for supremacy this season but finally reclaimed first place with their 3-1 defeat of Marumo Gallants on Tuesday.

Cardoso's team have crucially opened up a two-point gap over the Buccaneers, who were held to a 1-1 draw with Siwelele at the weekend.

But with nine matches of the season still to play, the Downs boss has called on players to retain their cutting edge and ward off any hint of complacency.

"It's more comfortable than yesterday because Orlando Pirates were one point ahead. It's even more comfortable than before they drew their game because we were level on points," Cardoso said in the Citizen.

“However, it's not really a comfortable place to be, and if we feel that it's comfortable, then we will take a false step. It is what it is, and we need to fight for more, and of course, it's more comfortable to be there towards the [FIFA] break for our energy because we feel more positive."

Pirates may well retake their lead at the top of the table well before Sundowns face Durban City on April 7. First up is a CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg with Stade Malien, ahead of the international break where a number of players will be away on international duty.

"Winning today puts us in a much more comfortable place to prepare for the Champions League match and you need to be in this place every time so that we can prepare for the next one with the best energy possible," added the head coach.
