Feeling Blue at the Bridge: Chelsea outclassed by perfect PSG

Chelsea's hopes of turning the tie around began to slip when Mamadou Sarr failed to control a long ball. That allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to race in behind to find the back of the net past gloveman Robert Sánchez.

PSG ruthlessly capitalised on another Chelsea error just eight minutes later. A midfield turnover sparked a counterattack and Bradley Barcola produced a clinical finish, bending the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

From that point on, the Parisians dictated proceedings with authority. They thought they had extended their lead again shortly after the half-hour mark when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found the net, but the effort was chalked off after Warren Zaïre-Emery was adjudged offside in the build-up.

Despite being under heavy pressure, Chelsea showed brief signs of resistance late in the half, only to be repeatedly denied by PSG stopper Matvei Safonov, who produced a string of sharp saves to keep out Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Jorrel Hato in quick succession.

At the other end, Sanchez did well to block Barcola from a tight angle and prevent further damage before the break.

After halftime, the visitors returned knowing their European campaign was slipping away, but they pushed forward in search of a consolation. Joao Pedro came closest, curling an effort narrowly wide as Chelsea attempted to restore some pride. Head coach Liam Rosenior then rang the changes just before the hour mark, withdrawing Pedro, Palmer, and captain Enzo Fernandez. Substitute Liam Delap made an immediate impact, forcing Safonov into a reflex save from close range.

However, any faint hope of a comeback was extinguished in the 62nd minute. PSG struck again on the counter, this time through Senny Mayulu, who curled a superb effort into the top corner to cap another incisive break and underline the hosts' clinical edge.

Chelsea's miserable evening took a further turn for the worse late on, as Trevoh Chalobah was stretchered off, summing up a night to forget for the Blues.

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior blamed the hectic season schedule and a lack of resources.

"They've played over 100 games in 18 months," he told Sky Sports.

"They've had no break in terms of the international games, the travelling that Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo do to South America. It's not an excuse. This is a by-product of the success of the Club World Cup, and it's a great thing that the club achieved at the Club World Cup. But you're seeing with Reece [James], you're seeing with players that if I don't manage their minutes, their likelihood of getting injured is increased very highly."

Meanwhile, PSG head coach Luis Enrique was pleasantly surprised by the form of his charges.

"Of course, I'm proud, you didn't expect that kind of result," said the Spaniard.

"If we think about the first match, the first 80 minutes, we were drawing the match. In the last 10 minutes, we overcame them.

"For us, today, the key was keeping the different moments of playing in that game. If they pressed us, we could keep the ball and counter the spaces on the counterattack.

"We did that and scored two goals. It's always difficult trying to control the match in this part of the competition."
