Morocco's AFCON finalist Adam Masina takes up coaching role in Italy

The former Torino defender will serve as a technical assistant under newly appointed head coach Francesco Salmi at the Serie D outfit based in Castel Maggiore, near Bologna.

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, as reported by Morocco World News, Masina has decided to end his playing career and pursue coaching after spending several months without a club.

Progresso confirmed his arrival in an official statement announcing Salmi's appointment, although the club did not explicitly confirm the defender's retirement.

Masina's appointment comes as Progresso look to turn around their fortunes following a difficult start to the season. The club recently dismissed Francesco Cattani after suffering five consecutive defeats, leaving them near the bottom of their Serie D group.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Resto del Carlino, Progresso general manager Simone Matta revealed that the appointment had been considered for some time, explaining that Masina had expressed an interest in pursuing a coaching career.

The move also takes the Moroccan back to the Bologna area, where he grew up after being born in Khouribga, Morocco, in 1994.

Masina developed through Bologna's youth academy and helped the club secure promotion to Serie A in 2015 before moving to English Premier League side Watford in 2018.

He subsequently returned to Italy, representing Udinese and Torino. His contract with Torino was terminated by mutual agreement in February 2026, leaving him without a club.

At international level, Masina represented Morocco and was part of the Atlas Lions squad that reached the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026. He started the final against Senegal in Rabat.

His reported retirement brings an end to a playing career spanning more than a decade across Italian and English football, as he begins a new chapter in coaching.
