Neo Maema explains why he turned down PSL clubs for Simba SC move

He deliberately avoided a move to local clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs.

The attacking midfielder, struggling to secure regular game time under Miguel Cardoso at Sundowns, opted for a season-long loan to Simba SC, seeking consistent playing opportunities and a new challenge.

While reports linked him strongly to Chiefs for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, Maema explained that his priority was a completely different environment.

Speaking on the SoccerBeat Podcast, Maema says he knew about the interests from Amakhosi, Simba's offer was perfect and came at the right time for him.

"I was aware of the Chiefs' interest, and my agent mentioned it to me. I sat down with my family and decided that the only thing that would help me now is a completely new environment. That wasn't going to be another club in South Africa - it had to be abroad."

"They came at the right time. My main focus is the CAF Champions League - to compete, perform at my best, and make this a memorable season," he said.

The move also reunited Maema with compatriot Rushine De Reuck, providing a familiar presence in a new setting. For the former Bloemfontein Celtic star, the shift abroad represents more than just a loan - it is a chance to grow as a player, challenge himself in a new league, and regain momentum in his career.

Maema's bold decision underscores his commitment to taking control of his career trajectory by stepping outside the comfort zone of the PSL to embrace a fresh environment and greater challenges abroad.
