New signing Rodrigo Mendoza to 'make his own path' at Atletico Madrid

He is focused on helping Diego Simeone's side compete on multiple fronts this season.

The 20-year-old midfielder was unveiled this week and spoke openly about comparisons with Barcelona's Pedri, which resurfaced following his arrival in the Spanish capital.

"It's good for a player like Pedri to say those things," Mendoza told reporters. "But I'm Rodrigo Mendoza and I have to make my own way. Comparisons will always be there in football."

Mendoza said Atletico had always been his first choice despite interest from other clubs.
"When I heard about Atletico's interest, it was clear in my head," he explained. "It's a giant club and always very difficult to face. Now it's a beautiful challenge for me."

The young Spaniard also expressed excitement about working under Simeone.
"We all know his demands and that will help me improve," he said. "I understand what the coach and the club expect, and I'm grateful for how everyone has welcomed me."

Mendoza arrives at a crucial stage of the campaign with Atletico competing in three major competitions. The team currently sits third in La Liga with 45 points from 22 matches, chasing leaders Barcelona and second-placed Real Madrid as the title race enters its decisive months.

In the Copa del Rey, Atletico faces Real Betis tonight at Estadio La Cartuja in a quarter-final clash for a place in the semi-finals. In Europe, Simeone's side has reached the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-offs after finishing 14th in the league phase and will meet Belgian club Club Brugge in the first leg on 18 February.

Having already exited the Supercopa de Espana after a semi-final defeat to Real Madrid on 8 January, Atletico hopes Mendoza's energy and composure in midfield can strengthen the squad during a demanding run of fixtures as they chase silverware on multiple fronts.
