Newcastle United's Yoane Wissa set to miss crucial World Cup qualifiers

The new Magpies signing picked up a knee injury in the second half of the 2026 World Cup qualifier 3-2 loss against Senegal after the Congolese blew a two-goal lead.

Wissa scored in both matches during the international break to keep his nation in the hunt for a spot at the global showpiece next year, with DRC lying two points behind Group B leaders Senegal.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe confirmed the injury to his £55 million signing who is yet to make his debut since joining the Toons on transfer deadline day.

"He's feeling the effects of the injury he sustained just before he came off (for DRC). So, we are going to have to see how he is," said Howe to Sky Sports.

He joins another new teammate Jacob Ramsey on Newcastle's injury list, who is only set to return after the next international break in October.

The 29-year-old Wissa could miss at least six fixtures for his new English club, including the opening Champions League encounter against Barcelona on Thursday.

The Leopards coach Sebastien Desabre will also be hoping his star forward miraculously recovers in time to face Togo and Sudan in the final two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
