Orlando Pirates miss chance to go top after draw with Sekhukhune United

The result leaves the Buccaneers level on 29 points with log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, but in second place due to an inferior goal difference. However, the Soweto giants still have a game in hand on the defending champions.

Sekhukhune United, meanwhile, remain fourth on the table with 26 points from 15 matches, continuing their push for a top-three finish.

Pirates showed early attacking intent, particularly down the left flank where Tshepang Moremi caused problems, while Patrick Maswanganyi drifted wide to add numbers and apply pressure. Despite their dominance in possession, clear-cut chances were hard to come by.

Babina Noko struggled to penetrate the Bucs defence, with striker Bradley Grobler largely isolated for long periods. Their best early moment came in the 11th minute when Letlhogonolo Mojela attempted an acrobatic effort, but failed to make clean contact.

Pirates gradually increased the pressure, pinning Sekhukhune deep in their own half, but lacked the final touch. The hosts were forced into an early change in the 33rd minute when Ellis Rammala was stretchered off injured and replaced by Keletso Makgalwa.

Just before the break, Grobler appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty following a challenge by Makhehlene Makhaula. At the other end, Sekhukhune goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner produced a superb point-blank save to deny Nkosinathi Sibisi after a low cross from Kamogelo Sebelebele, ensuring the sides went into halftime level.

The second half started at a slower tempo, but Pirates had a golden opportunity in the 66th minute when Sebelebele broke through, only to be denied once again by the impressive Leaner.

The Buccaneers continued to dominate possession and introduced Oswin Appollis late on, who came close in the 80th minute before going down under pressure - appeals for a penalty were waved away.

In the closing stages, Pirates threw numbers forward in search of a winner, but Leaner stood firm with another crucial save, while the Sekhukhune defence, marshalled by veteran Daniel Cardoso, held resolute as the sides shared the spoils.
