Pablo Barrios back from Injury as Atletico gear up for Spurs clash

The 22-year-old rejoined first-team training on Sunday after a month-long injury layoff and could be available for Tuesday's fixture at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Coach Diego Simeone confirmed the midfielder's return, saying: "According to the doctors, he may be available by Tuesday and will train with the group on Sunday. Let's hope that what I'm saying is true and that he'll be back with us soon."

Barrios had been sidelined since 5 February, missing nine matches across La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League following a muscle injury sustained against Real Betis.

Simeone highlighted Barrios' importance to the team: "He gives us energy, a good pace of play, he applies pressure. He gives us direction and security in that area of the midfield where we need legs."

The Argentine coach also praised the young player's development: "He's a young lad, from the club, growing in every way, in his personality, character, the margin for improvement is infinite. As far as he wants to continue growing, we're here to help him."

Reflecting on the team's performances without him, Simeone added: "There's no replacement for Pablo, that's clear, the other lads have different characteristics. We try to protect him so that he can continue playing and be available for all the games."

Barrios has made eight appearances in this season's Champions League, totalling 659 minutes and providing one assist before his injury. His return comes at a key stage as Atletico aim to stay in contention for both the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey final on 18 April.

Midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza remains the only absentee due to an ankle sprain, but Barrios' presence strengthens Atletico's options as they look to gain an advantage over Tottenham before the second leg in London.
