Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer ruled out of Champions League battle at Atalanta

Bayern confirmed that their captain sustained a minor muscle tear in his left calf during Friday's dominant 4-1 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. The German champions did not provide an official timeline for his return, but reports in Germany suggest the veteran goalkeeper could be sidelined for around two weeks.

The injury means Neuer is set to miss Tuesday's Champions League trip to Italy and is also doubtful for the return leg in Munich. He could additionally be absent for Bayern's key Bundesliga meeting with title rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

It is another frustrating setback for Neuer, who has struggled with recurring calf problems over the past two seasons. The experienced keeper missed several matches earlier this campaign and was ruled out for ten games last season with a similar issue. Approaching his 40th birthday later this month, the Bayern captain has yet to confirm whether he will extend his contract beyond the end of the current season.

Neuer also stepped away from international football in August 2024, bringing an end to his long-standing career with Germany national football team.

Bayern's Injury Concerns Grow

Bayern will travel to Bergamo without several key players.

Defender Alphonso Davies remains sidelined with a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

There are further fitness concerns for Kompany. Striker Harry Kane missed the win over Monchengladbach with a calf knock and remains a doubt, although the Bayern manager is hopeful the forward could recover in time. Japanese defender Hiroki Ito has returned to light training but faces a race to prove his fitness.

Centre-back Dayot Upamecano is still unavailable as he continues to recover from a knee injury that has kept him out for several weeks.

With Neuer ruled out, young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig is expected to deputise between the posts.

Despite their injury list, Bayern remain strong favourites to progress, but losing their captain and first-choice goalkeeper is a significant blow as the Bundesliga leaders chase European success.
