Peter Odemwingie cautions Nigerian stars against poor lifestyle choices

Peter Odemwingie cautions Nigerian stars against poor lifestyle choices

With European leagues set to resume following the summer break, Odemwingie believes maintaining the right lifestyle away from the pitch will be crucial for players hoping to remain in peak condition and perform consistently throughout the campaign.

His advice comes ahead of Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Super Eagles expected to regroup in September for the first international break of the new season.

The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, giving Nigeria another major continental qualification campaign to prepare for.

Drawing from his own experience with the national team, Odemwingie recalled a humorous moment from one of his Super Eagles camps to highlight the importance of staying properly hydrated.

"I'll tell you guys a funny story. Super Eagles camp, training day. It was hot. The doc said, 'Dehydrate, dehydrate, dehydrate,'" Odemwingie recalled, as quoted by Pulse Sports Nigeria.

"I said, 'Doc, are you sure? Maybe hydrate?' He was laughing, and it was so funny at the moment. I never forget that because I keep memories I take from camp."

While the incident provided a lighthearted memory, Odemwingie used it to deliver a serious message to the current players about making responsible choices.

The former West Bromwich Albion forward specifically warned players about excessive alcohol consumption, which can contribute to dehydration and negatively affect physical preparation.

"If you drink too much alcohol, you will be dehydrated," he cautioned, while encouraging players to consider healthier alternatives.

"Coco water, healthy ways always the best way."

Meanwhile, several Super Eagles stars have already begun their preparations for the new season. Victor Osimhen, in particular, has made an encouraging start, scoring twice despite his side suffering defeat in their recent outing.

With the domestic and European campaigns approaching, Odemwingie's message serves as a reminder that proper preparation, nutrition and recovery can be just as important as work on the training pitch.
