PSL Preview Wrap: Top-flight newcomers brace for tough tests as Premiership returns

With the 2025/26 season expected to be one of the most competitive yet, newly promoted sides Orbit College FC, Siwelele FC, and Durban City are determined to begin their campaigns on a strong note.

While these rookies bring hunger and enthusiasm, the reality of facing seasoned Premiership opponents in their opening matches presents a serious challenge. Below, we look at five of the most intriguing fixtures to watch this weekend.

AmaZulu vs Orbit College

Orbit College, under the leadership of long-serving coach Pogiso Makhoye, will be eager to announce their arrival in style. The club earned promotion through the playoffs, and now step onto the big stage with nothing to lose and everything to prove.

However, standing in their way is a formidable AmaZulu side led by Arthur Zwane. Usuthu are coming off a positive 2024/25 season where they finished in the top eight, and they will be determined to make home advantage count. A strong start is crucial if they hope to better last season's performance, making this an early test of character for both teams.

Richards Bay vs Marumo Gallants

Richards Bay will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals last weekend. While the heavy loss was a setback, it provided them with early competitive action that could sharpen them for this clash against Marumo Gallants.

Gallants, on the other hand, have undergone changes of their own, most notably with the appointment of Frenchman Alexandre Laffitte as head coach. With a new man at the helm, players will be keen to impress and fight for their positions, adding intensity to what is already expected to be a closely contested match.

Polokwane City vs Magesi

This all-Limpopo derby promises fireworks as local bragging rights are on the line. Last season saw the two sides trade victories - Polokwane City took the first leg 2-0, while Magesi avenged with a 1-0 win in the return fixture.

Polokwane, affectionately known as Rise and Shine, had a more stable campaign, finishing seventh on the log. Magesi FC, nicknamed Dikwena tsa Meetse, finished 13th and are aiming for significant improvement this season. Expect a fierce battle between two sides desperate to assert their dominance in the province.

Siwelele vs Golden Arrows

The return of professional football to Bloemfontein has reignited passion in the Free State capital. Siwelele, back in the Premiership after years in the lower divisions, are expected to draw large home crowds, particularly for this historic first match.

Coach Lehlohonolo Seema will count on the emotional boost of playing at home, but it won't be easy against Golden Arrows. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi is eager to turn the page after a disappointing season and is targeting a winning start. With his experience and tactical know-how, Arrows will fancy their chances of spoiling Siwelele's homecoming party.

TS Galaxy vs Durban City

Durban City's return to top-flight football is a significant moment, and they've entrusted seasoned coach Gavin Hunt with the responsibility of guiding them through their debut season. Hunt, a multiple league winner, knows what it takes to compete at this level and has bolstered his squad with experienced players such as Thabo Nodada and Hashim Domingo.

Their first assignment, however, is no easy task. TS Galaxy have developed a reputation for playing attractive football and have been a thorn in the side of many top teams. Although they've lost a few key players during the off-season, coach Sead Ramovic will still have his side well-prepared. For Hunt's men, a solid performance will be needed to mark their top-flight return with a win.
