Appollis, who now plays for Orlando Pirates, has become a key figure for Bafana in recent international campaigns, scoring crucial goals and delivering consistent performances since his national team debut under coach Hugo Broos in 2023. His latest strike came in a 1-1 friendly draw against Panama at Moses Mabhida Stadium, further underlining his growing importance to the national side.
The 24-year-old’s career began at the former Ajax Cape Town academy, where he was identified early as a promising talent. However, his progress stalled after a move to SuperSport United, where he struggled for game time and eventually found himself without a club.
At his lowest point, Appollis returned to Cape Town before receiving a lifeline from Kwanele Kopo, the former SuperSport United Diski Challenge coach. That intervention proved pivotal, helping him rebuild his career at Pretoria Callies before earning a move to Polokwane City and later securing a transfer to Orlando Pirates.
From there, his career trajectory shifted dramatically. Within two years, Appollis had earned a Bafana Bafana call-up and quickly established himself as a regular contributor on the international stage, producing goals and assists that have made him one of the team’s standout performers.
Williams, who shared a close connection with Appollis during their time together at SuperSport United, said the winger’s journey reflects rare mental strength and professionalism.
“Yeah, amazing shows the type of person he is and his character,” Williams said. “Three years ago, he was without a team and going through it. I had a lot of chats with Oswin because we shared so much about our backgrounds and the communities where we come from.”
He added that Appollis’ consistency has set him apart in an era where many players struggle to maintain standards.
“You can just give him praise; you can’t praise him enough for what he’s done over the last few years because it’s not easy in today’s world. It’s very difficult to be a professional and a professional who shows up every week and shows his level,” Williams said.
“He’s been consistent for the last two or three years for the national team as well. It speaks volumes about the type of person he is and the player he is.”
