Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe clarifies injury speculation

The Real Madrid forward had been struggling with a recurring left knee issue that first appeared in late 2025. He was forced to miss approximately three and a half weeks, a period that included his absence from domestic and European fixtures.

Mbappe returned to competitive action as a substitute on Tuesday, 17 March, in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Manchester City. He last played in La Liga on Sunday, helping Madrid to a 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid.

"I've made a full recovery. I had the opportunity in Paris to get a good diagnosis, and together we designed a plan to get me back to my best level with Real Madrid, also keeping the World Cup in mind," Mbappe told Diario AS.

Speculation had suggested his absence was about managing fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but the forward firmly denied this. "There's no debate. I've played in two World Cups, won one and reached the final in the other. I always prepare by playing every match for my club," he said.

He added: "It's clear I want to play every game for Real Madrid. I'm not going to change my approach. The best way to be ready is to play, score goals, win titles and fight for the club. That's what I'll continue to do."

Mbappe also defended Madrid's handling of his injury amid recent scrutiny of the club's medical department. "The club and I handled this in the best way possible. We were always in communication. There is no issue," he said. He also denied reports suggesting he had ever refused to play for France.

Madrid have strengthened their fitness and medical structure in recent months, with Antonio Pintus returning to a leading role and former club doctor Niko Mihic also reinstated.

The team will next face RCD Mallorca on 4 April after the international break, with Mbappe now fit and ready to contribute.
