Trent Alexander-Arnold also played his first match for the side in over two and a half months after returning from injury, providing an assist and defending well.

Real Socieded came into the match full of confidence on a nine-match unbeaten run under American head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, but were given a significant wake-up call by Los Blancos.

Gonzalo Garcia got the home side off to a blistering start with as he poked home from close range after getting on the end of a curling cross just five minutes into the game.

Real Sociedad responded well to going behind, though, and fought back for an equaliser that came in the 21st minute via a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty.

However, things went very poorly for the visitors from that point.

Just four minutes later, Vinicius won a penalty and converted from the spot to restore his side's lead.

Alvaro Carreras then slid a throughball for the on-rushing Federico Valverde around the half-hour mark, and the midfielder turned his marker before hitting a lovely strike from the edge of their area to make it 3-1.

Vinicius completed the scoring just after half time as he won a second penalty and made no mistake from the spot to secure an emphatic win for Real Madrid.

Elsewhere in LaLiga, Djibil Sow (42') and Toni Martinez (60') traded goals as Sevilla and Alaves drew 1-1 at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, while Elche and Osasuna drew 0-0 at Estadio Martinez Valero.

Goals from Martin Satriano (53') and Mauro Arambarri (41' pen) were enough to hand Getafe a 2-1 win over Villarreal at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Espanyol and Celta played out to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the RCDE Stadium.

Ferran Jutgla opened the scoring for the visitors in the 38th minute, with Kiki Garcia restoring parity in the 66th minute.

Tyrhys Dolan thought he had won the match for Espanyol with an 86th-minute strike but Borja Iglesias grabbed an equaliser deep into stoppage time to ensure the spoils would be shared.
