Report: Cesc Fabregas poised for Bayer Leverkusen move as Xabi Alonso's exit looms

The Bundesliga outfit have identified the former Spain midfielder as the ideal candidate to continue their attacking, high-pressing style, with talks reportedly gaining momentum.

Fabregas, 38, has made waves in his first full season as Como's head coach, guiding the newly promoted Serie A side to a comfortable 10th-place finish. His proactive tactics, blending possession-based play with relentless pressing, have drawn praise across Europe.

After Como's 3-1 victory over Cagliari on May 10, Fabregas hinted at a potential exit, saying, "Whatever happens, I will always be grateful to Como. I want to leave a legacy here, a club ready for whoever comes next."

German outlet Bild reported that Fabregas has told Como he would only leave for Leverkusen, ruling out moves to other Serie A clubs or rivals RB Leipzig, who also expressed interest. Leverkusen are optimistic about securing his signature, with Italian sources claiming discussions for a three-year deal are well underway.

However, Como, where Fabregas holds a minority stake, are reluctant to let him go, with his contract running until 2028.

Alonso, who led Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2024, confirmed his exit after a 2-4 loss to Borussia Dortmund on May 11, saying, "These are my last two games as Leverkusen coach. This club will remain in my heart forever." He is widely expected to take over at Real Madrid, replacing Carlo Ancelotti.

Fabregas, a World Cup and two-time European Championship winner, brings a wealth of experience from his playing days at Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea. His coaching rise has been swift, with Como averaging 12.5 shots per game under his leadership, a testament to his attacking philosophy.

Leverkusen's squad, featuring stars like Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah, offers Fabregas the tools to compete in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

While Erik ten Hag remains a backup option, Leverkusen are focused on Fabregas to usher in a new era. With Como potentially eyeing Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti as a replacement, the managerial merry-go-round is in full swing. For Leverkusen fans, Fabregas's potential arrival signals an exciting continuation of their club's ambitious journey.
