Report: Chelsea's opening bid for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato rejected

The 19-year-old Dutch international, who has impressed as both a centre-back and left-back over two seasons at Ajax, has attracted interest from multiple top European clubs this transfer window. Chelsea, looking to reinforce their defensive options ahead of the new Premier League campaign, moved early to secure the promising talent but were met with resistance from Ajax.

While the Blues' offer was rebuffed, insiders indicate Ajax have acknowledged Hato's desire to explore a move and have issued a counter-proposal to Chelsea, signaling that negotiations are far from over.

Hato missed Ajax's preseason semifinal match in the Como Cup on Thursday - not due to transfer uncertainty but because he joined the squad late. New Ajax head coach John Heitinga was non-committal on Hato's availability for the final on Sunday, emphasizing the player remains an Ajax man for now.

"He's still an Ajax player," Heitinga stated. "I can't promise (he'll play on Sunday). We still have to train, and it's still a few days. But he and [Kenneth] Taylor are still Ajax players at the moment."

Chelsea's interest in Hato aligns with head coach Enzo Maresca's vision for a defender capable of contributing across the backline and stepping into midfield to aid build-up play. Hato's versatility and technical skills make him an ideal candidate to fit this mould.

The London club's pursuit of defensive reinforcements continues alongside other targets. Sources reveal Chelsea have intensified their efforts to sign RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, while also monitoring Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho, who was notably omitted from United's preseason tour squad.

Ajax's stance suggests that while they are open to parting with the teenager, any deal will require Chelsea to meet their valuation - a scenario that promises a lively transfer saga ahead.
